As we chat in Tim Smith's lab looking at a few of his new releases, he pours this Shiraz into my glass. There is a pause and then an awkward silence. He turns the other way to ponder before swinging his head back around looking me in the eye....
and says, "Such a f#$%n great year for Barossa Shiraz," with a wry smile on his face. Tim Smith doesn't say much, but when he talks, it's worth noting. He's certainly one of many great individuals that make this part of the wine world such a diverse and unique place.
Stick your nose in the glass and you'll very quickly see what he means...
A blend of Eden Valley and Barossa vineyards, think five spice, cedar, licks of vanilla. A generous but sleek wine, fine spices skirt the edge of the palate. Cherry Ripe, cola and red plums add interest and reach out with soft hands. A lusciously smooth ride - a bit like Smith's Triumph bike. There's some grunt in the belly but the handling is pristine. A cracking Barossa Shiraz for sure.
