Sapling Yard The Curmudgeon Shiraz 2019

A new winery to come across the Qwine raising bench. These wines from Sapling Yard arrived with no detail but for what was on the label. There was no image of this Shiraz available on the website either so the Shiraz Viognier is pictured above.

As the label says, this Curmudgeon Shiraz is said to, "soothe the most archaic bad tempered miser." Made with 30% whole bunches and a dollop of Viognier (3%), it sees French oak for ten months.

The savoury appeal from the whole bunches is evident. Licks of char and cured meats flank red berry and plum fruit. The fruit lands on the sweet spot on the mid-palate but the acid takes a back seat and seems timid. Dried thyme, faint licorice and cool climate white pepper push through to a long finish. A little more balance and a few more points would come easy.

Drink to five years.
