Ravens Croft The Waagee 2018

A Bordeaux blend named in honour of Mark Ravenscroft's father who would beam with delight and say, "Waagee, now that is a great wine," to give a fabulous drop his approval. No doubt he would be exclaiming the same about this release.

This blend sees the marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot (60/25/15). The savoury characters of the Cabernet are hard to miss - it's leafy with dried herbs and roasted peppers. Black currant and cassis mingle with leather and cigar box notes. Time in the glass shows a cheeky tomato bush character and an ever so slight mintiness. Dark chocolate and dark plummy fruit grows some stature over a couple of days of tasting. Ever so fine spices are chiselled into a persistent finish with a firmish tannin presence pointing to an age worthy wine. Give this a year or two in bottle and it will reward for many years to come.
