Gerler Rej Montepulciano Mataro 2019

Blends fascinate me. The exploration is exciting, outrageous and fascinating all at the same time. Here are two varieties singing a duet together - a duet I wouldn't have contemplated.

A 71/29 blend of McLaren Vale fruit, for the record, Rej is a goat from Willunga. Credit to Kris Cush, wife of winemaker Dave Cush, for the stunning artwork on the label.

Big flavours consume the mouth - it is deep as it is wide. There is a pretty floral and blue/purple fruit thing early but it's a tease. Meaty and earthy, it gets down to business in quick time. Calling for red meat dishes, this is comfort wine (if there was such a thing). Blueberry and violet aromas continue to impress. Firmish, silty tannins slide in for the last word and cling on much longer than expected.

The restaurant at Brisbane's City Winery is focused on all food having touched the flame - this a perfect partner for those big, meaty dishes.

Drink to six years.
