Maude Pinot Noir 2018

Maude's entry level Pinot (and I use 'entry' loosely). This is an absolute ripper and super example of Central Otago Pinot at the right price.

I was at the Maude winery with winemakers Dan and Sarah-Kate when they were blending the 2019. To be a fly on the wall and witness the conversation that goes into this blend is nothing short of fascinating. Only the best will do and some eight likely blends ended up on the bench - from what seemed 200 barrels. I suspect if they took my preference there would be gold medals flooding their trophy cabinet. Maybe, and we will wait and see what the 2019 looks like...

Dark plums, dark cherries, some char and charcuterie. Scents of clove add impressive detail. A hint of toasted pine nuts kick in deep if you go looking. It's smooth and persistent with a fine spice folding its way through. Tannins are delicate, powdery and ooze moreishness. Get around this.

Drink to five years.
