I first came across the Arila Gardens label recently in a line up of 150+ Barossa Grenache wines. I'm writing a book on that epic variety so stay tuned... But for the moment, zero in on this wine. This is a winery you need to slot into the "One to Watch" category. Here we have a Shiraz that is a sublime example of Barossa Shiraz.
Hailing from Moppa, this sets things alight with its drive and impressive mouth presence. Its weight is managed superbly. But give it time in a decanter and it shows some epic form. Once it settles, the blackcurrant and hint of eucalypt on opening moves on to reveal purple fruits and mulberries emerging from a chrysalis. Pretty purple flowers and blueberry aromas are delicate with a deft touch of meatiness riding on their tail. Soft spices are massaged into its frame with drying, dusty and powdery tannins on a persistent finish. There is a touch of oak influence but time will see this fade. Above all, did I say this was impressive? Watch this space - Arila Gardens is going somewhere.
