Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 2016

A Shiraz I want to bunker down with and not share.

With an average vine age of 80 years, 67% of this Shiraz is sourced from the Barossa Valley and 33% from Eden Valley. Barossa Valley Shiraz provides richness, density and concentration, while Eden Valley Shiraz provides the exotic aromatics and seamless palate structure.

Matured for 22 months in 28% new French oak barriques and hogsheads, the balance in one year and older American octaves, French barriques and hogsheads. The smaller octaves ensure the fruit has a greater oak to contact ratio. But is the oak obtrusive? No.

Deep plum and dark fruits rule with chocolately and cedar nuances. Burnt fig adds to the sweetish oak too. Baking spices surge to a long and glorious finish. The fruit maintains a rounded presence through the mouth - it's moreish and captivating. Licorice bullets and blackberries have the last word but there is no escaping the elegance.
