Yelland and Papps Limited Cuvée Shiraz 2014

A Barossa Shiraz that slides down with ease. Dripping in class, you'd be inclined to think this was an old-world wine on inspection - it's just so captivating to absorb. A brilliant wine from Yelland & Papps.

Michael and Susan Papps' ability to keep their customers immersed in a journey of texture and elegance deserves respect. Their creativity with the Second Take range does this impressively but this Limited Cuvée range just cranks the dial that bit more adding prestige on a grand scale. And, oh my, this Shiraz is something.

The fruit is sourced from a dry grown vineyard in the Marananga sub-region. 100% whole bunches were hand-fed into French oak puncheons and left to ferment naturally for 318 days with no sulphur additions. It then saw 317 days on skins with a small addition of sulphur. That fight between new and old world is quite an exceptional wrestle. Blueberries and mulberries do their best to emerge with dense plums and earthiness. Sit back and watch this evolve. A few hours in a decanter and this lights up the room. The fruit takes a back seat to soy, licorice bullets, Christmas cake fruit and a slight touch of meatiness. Curiously, that renowned Barossa spice isn't as pronounced. The savoury aspects from the stems and skins take the stage with the fruit tucking in behind. Skinsy and drying to close, it's comforting and moreish. Superb! Barossa Shiraz but not like you know it.
