Clandestine Vineyards Pinot Noir 2021

I must admit, the only time I have an Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir in my possession is when I have a samples sent to me. Given the choice to buy Pinot, I head to a couple of other regions. Maybe I need to explore Hills Pinot more? But for those who like a little oomph in their Pinot, this may float your boat.

There is some slick appeal early before the big players muscle in. It's got weight and presence, spice too - lots of it. To taste, you could mistake it for a Shiraz although it doesn't carry Shiraz's absolute density. After tasting, I discover Ben Riggs makes this wine too. As with my comments for the new Clandestine Heart and Minds Grenache, Riggs produces big wines. This Pinot sticks to that narrative.

Cherry vodka, red apple peel and red plums do most of the leg work. The use of 30% whole bunches adds some texture through the mouth but there is a spice that just hits and sticks. Drying, that spiciness refuses to move. I prefer my Pinots delicate and lacy - this is more bad ass riding a Harley with a leather jacket and a firm face ready to stare you out.
