A sturdy, reliable type that hits the right notes consistently. This release from the After Five Wine Co is an engaging cuddle in a glass. Generous with a dash of energy, it's a wine that grows on you. Winning!

There is plenty to peruse. Licorice headlines the opening with black currants and black cherries sliding in. Time in the glass delivers berry pie delight with some pastry feels too. Rubs of earth along with dried herbs add detail to a long and persistent finish that gradually softens. Puckering and drying, moisture is slowly drawn from the mouth with fine brush strokes of cocoa and powdery tannins having the last say. It's a terrific drink for cool nights and D&M chats.

Drink to eight years+

93/100

It's an absolutely ripping wine! The detail, the interest and the wonderfully managed weight deliver a fabulous expression of the variety. Run at this. Please do.

There is a catch, however... It is only available in New Zealand. Coming from a small Waipara (North Canterbury) producer, I was grateful to receive a sample. Fermented in older French oak, it spent time on lees for four months prior to bottling.

The weight and presence of this wine smashes the brief. Slightly off-dry, fine sheets of spice curl around the fruit adding detail and moreishness. With a captivating length, it's a wine that has a terrific autumnal appeal. Cinnamon scroll and ginger nut biscuit spices sway and move through every crevice of the mouth. White fleshed stonefruit, golden apple and nashi pears add to a well-handled flavour profile. A fine veil of vanilla meanders about in the background further enhancing the detail and interest. But that length - excellent! Ordinarily, I wouldn't reach for a Pinot Gris but this one shifts that mindset. Sit back and sip slow on a lazy afternoon as the sun gradually falls from the sky. Bliss.

Drink now to three years.

95/100

These wines are considered and well made. The L'Etranger Pinot Noir fruit is sourced from Central Otago. A wonderful expression of the variety, this will age beautifully.

Tasted over several days, it opened up a treat and really demonstrated the ability of Central Otago Pinot Noir to age. Sourced from the Gibbston subregion, it's the closest district to Queenstown, an easy 25 minute drive.

The fruit certainly speaks of Central Otago but I found this wine to have some heft for Gibbston. This subregion usually produces lean and skeletal expressions whereas the power and grace hails from Bannockburn and Bendigo.

Layered with interest, think sour cherries, black cherries, dark plums, black currants and charred steak. The theme of some meatiness reaches throughout with a charcuterie board presence. Earthy and delicately spiced, the length is moreish and wonderfully persistent. Waves of generous fruit, spice and meatiness unfurl in a never-ending fashion. Sip slow and embrace. Decant to enjoy now but this will age gracefully.

Drink to eight years+

93/100

The tannins are moving to the powdery zone so you know something special is brewing. Decant well for now but give it the time it deserves. I'd love to see it again in a few years time. From the oldest vines at Golden Grove Estate, the depth, density and complexity will ensure this will continue to live long.

Coming off vines planted in 2001, it sees 36 months in American oak and then 24 months in bottle before release, the Gran Reserva wines are only produced in exceptional years. Tasted over three days, time was its friend and it glistened. The gradual emergence from its chrysalis over a few days highlighted its ability to age comfortably.

A platter of interest diffuses from the first swirl, think hazelnuts, latte, dense plums and cherry liqueur and cola. The mid-palate is a complex beast with respectable weight showing charcuterie board meatiness and bacon hock highlights with a fine dusting of dried Mediterranean herbs. Each time I return something new leaps out - beautiful! Finishing with black tea and brick dust tannins, there is a moreishness and regal feel about its carry. It's an excellent wine without doubt but give it time in a decanter to ensure you see it at its best.

Drink to ten years+

95/100
