Skin contact Vermentino, yet if you were unaware of its make up, you'd think it was a clever take on the variety full stop. The brilliance here is in the making.
The last time The Skins was made was back in 2017. That was a ripping wine itself only to be backed up by this beauty.
Full skins for 10 days plunged twice a day. Pale straw appearance, there's a delicacy about its weight and presence - the deft touch of winemaker Ray Costanzo the clincher. He's made Vermentino the variety he hangs his hat on. 2020 was a challenging Granite Belt vintage and this release was made with fruit sourced from the Chalmers vineyard in Mildura, Victoria.
Mandarin peel, ginger biscuit spice and a flurry of white flowers consume the nose. So fresh yet there's a well handled weight adding moreishness. A faint minerally vibe muses in the background with white fleshed stonefruit waltzing with ease. Finishing with a mouth watering grapefruit acidity, this is a superb Vermentino. Stand and applaud now.
