Dodgy Bros Juxtaposed Old Vine Grenache 2020

A release I always look forward to. Wes Pearson always produces great Grenache - this one is no different. The fruit source is the same as 2020 but he's moved away from his uber-cool street art labels to these very attractive labels by artist Adam Harriden.

Quilty and Gransden Chardonnay 2020

A ripping Chardonnay for 15 bucks. Top value! Bargain material indeed. I'd be more than happy to indulge in a glass or two.

Lemon Villa Chardonnay 2018

I like this Chardonnay from NSW's Orange region by little-known producer Lemon Villa. The wines are made by Duncan Cook. No image supplied.

Quilty and Gransden Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Orange is a region that I feel produces some very impressive Sauvignon Blanc. It must be the cool climate? This release from Quilty & Gransden is weighty and not as clean and crisp as you may expect.

Pertaringa Rifle and Hunt Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

One of those times when the corkscrew slips through like a hot knife in butter. Yikes! Maybe I just had a bad cork or maybe there might be others the same. Who knows but that's the gamble with a bit of bark in a wine bottle. Thank goodness the wine was not impacted but I suspect it may impede the longevity of bottle aging.

Geoff Merrill G and W Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A blend of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra (73/27), there is some heft about this Cabernet Sauvignon.

Quilty and Gransden Shiraz 2018

I've said it before, it's always great to see new wines make it to the Qwine tasting bench. These Quilty & Gransden are part of the Cumulus Wines stable out of Orange. Eye-catching labels with cheeky confidence stated on the back, "We think it's quite good, we hope you do too." Well, this is crazy good Shiraz for 15 bucks!

d'Arenberg The Twenty Eight Road Mourvedre 2018

Steak night kind of wine. A rustic and generous Mourvedre for your drinking pleasure.

Hahndorf Hill Gru Gruner Veltliner 2021

Brightness, freshness, happiness all in one. What a fabulously refreshing wine.

Soumah Single Vineyard Syrah 2020

I always find Soumah wines very approachable and so easy to kick back with. Well made with that eye-catching duck egg label to appease the eye, this Syrah is another beauty worth considering.

Pertaringa Understudy Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

The Understudy. A cleverly named entry-level Cabernet Sauvignon for Pertaringa.

Lemon Villa Riesling 2018

As with the 2019, this is not a joyous and fresh style but a more serious, considered type of Riesling. For a 2018, it seems a little further developed than I would have expected.

Lemon Villa Riesling 2019

Lemon Villa is from some of Australia's coolest and highest vineyards - so the back label tells me. These wines are made by Duncan Cook of Cook's Lot fame.

Hahndorf Hill White Mischief Gruner Veltliner 2021

Gruner Veltliner is a variety rarely seen on this tasting bench. Mind you, there is not a lot of it around in Australia but Hahndorf Hill in the Adelaide Hills has made this variety their hero. And damn, aren't they shaking the cage by producing some fascinating examples. This White Mischief is said to be their New World style of Gruner where the emphasis is on expressing the primary fruits. Strap yourself in!

Pizzini Arneis 2021

Some weight distinguishes this Arneis from the Riesling and Pinot Grigio in the Pizzini range. The diversity of these wines is something. Not only is there seemingly a wine for every occasion and taste, but the width and breadth of texture and interest are also explored.

Henschke Johann's Garden 2019

Furrowed brow, game face on. This is a pleaser that wants to impress.  A blend of Grenache, Mataro and a dollop of Shiraz for good measure.

Huntington Estate Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2021

There's no denying the refreshment this Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend delivers. Clean, cool and crisp, this is ready to play a support role for your next weekend outing in the sun.

Langmeil Rough Diamond Grenache 2020

An easy-going Barossa Grenache to wet your whistle.

Pizzini Riesling 2021

Cool climates deliver green apple goodness that can be seen in Riesling from such districts and this Pizzini release exemplifies that once again. What a fabulous drink. Oh, and have I mentioned how much I love these new labels? Well played team Pizzini for delivering a fresh new look.

Langmeil Wattle Brae Eden Valley Riesling 2021

A lime-a-thon if that is at all possible. Incredibly refreshing, scrap the post-mowing beer this summer and reach for a Riesling like this.

Pizzini Pinot Grigio 2021

That soft touch is the feature of this Pinot Grigio from Pizzini. So fine and delicate, you feel like a silk sheet rides through your mouth.

Indigo Vineyards Beechworth Chardonnay 2019

A Chardonnay displaying some generosity. A soothing type that knocks on the old school door.

Craggy Range Te Muna Road Pinot Noir 2017

Only two Craggy Range wines have graced these pages over the years. I spied this on the shelf when in search of beer at an independent retailer on the Gold Coast. For $44 I just had to have a looksy. And I'm pleased I did. What a superb Pinot Noir from New Zealand's Martinborough region!

Indigo Vineyards Shiraz 2018

Hello Mr Reliable. Shiraz from Victoria's Beechworth region.

Small Acres Heritage Blend Apple Cider

It's been a while between cider reviews so this sample was Small Acres in Orange, NSW, was very much welcome. This is a good get for those that enjoy real cider.

Devil's Staircase Pinot Gris 2019

Rockburn's entry-level label is Devil's Staircase. Here we have a Pinot Gris from Central Otago.

Burton McMahon D'Aloisio's Vineyard Chardonnay 2020

Of the two Burton and McMahon Chardonnays, I preferred this D'Aloisio's Vineyard. I just loved the length. It just purrs.

Rockburn Pinot Gris 2019

We have a live one here! Pinot Gris in the zone.

Yangarra Estate Shiraz 2019

Wines like these are hard to fault - they just ooze class. A clever Shiraz once more from Peter Fraser and Yangarra Estate.

Huntington Estate Unwooded Chardonnay 2021

Unwooded Chardonnay used to be a thing, but not so much anymore I find. Winemakers have worked out how to embrace oak a little better rather than saturate the fruit. Here, this is a fruit party and you're all invited. It's good to see an unwooded version still floating around.

Burton McMahon George's Vineyard Chardonnay 2020

A collaboration between Gundog Estate's Matt Burton and Seville Estate's Dylan McMahon, there are four wines in the range. Two each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - all from Yarra Valley sites.

Wren Wines Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019

Hilltops Grenache and Mourvedre meets Hunter Valley Shiraz in this spicy blend.

Tim Smith Wines Eden Valley Viognier 2021

The glory of the Barossa vintage 2021 continues. This time it continues upstairs in the cooler Eden Valley. What a gem this is. If you're a Viognier fan, dial this up on your radar - it doesn't miss a beat.

Shottesbrooke Reserve Series Eliza Shiraz 2016

The beauty of vertical tastings... It was great to sit this beside the 2018 and get a glimpse into the future. Comfortable in its own skin, this 2016 oozes class. There is a little tension evident that will push this into a long life.

Shottesbrooke Reserve Series Eliza Shiraz 2018

A very clever McLaren Vale Shiraz from Shottesbrook. Some more time in bottle will help as is evidenced by the 2016 which is looking a treat. I had the luxury of tasting this over a couple of days. And well, I really bloody like it. There's a charm to its early demonstration of bravado.

Shottesbrooke Reserve Series The Proprietor 2016

Only produced in outstanding years, The Proprietor is a tribute to Shottesbrooke's history. A blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec, it sees time in French and American oak.

Seppeltsfield Barossa Grenache 2020

The essence of a smashable Barossa Grenache. Woah!

Running With Bulls Garnacha 2021

This is the DJ pumping the beats and you are the dancer busting the moves. Such a vibrant and energetic wine, juicy fruit bursts from the glass and textural feels seduce.

Sons of Eden Notus Grenache 2020

Grenache glory on high. What a beauty! Elegance and precision without pretentiousness.

Teusner Avatar 2019

Good Grenache. Really good! With the help of some Mataro and Shiraz (50/30/20), this is a wonderfully balanced wine and then some.

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard The Peake Cabernet Shiraz 2019

Oh, this is flying. Condor style. Barely making an effort and making maximum ground. It's graceful and considered. Boom!

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 2016

A Shiraz I want to bunker down with and not share.

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard The Nest Cabernet Franc 2019

Quite brutish and muscular, a Cabernet Franc that is bigger than I imagined to be honest.

Wren Wines Vermentino 2021

This is such a fresh and enticing wine with refreshment oozing from its veins. I'm picturing sitting by the river with some seafood and absorbing the gentle afternoon breeze. Divine.

Golden Grove Estate Vermentino 2021

A wonderful textural appeal is the feature of this ever-impressive Vermentino from Golden Grove Estate.

Yalumba The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The famous Yalumba The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet. Power with a veil of grace. It's dense and brooding and perched atop muscular shoulders.

Langmeil Massimo 2020

Primitivo and Montepulciano come together delivering a pretty and uplifting wine.

Pizzini La Volpe Nebbiolo 2019

Gee, I love these new Pizzini labels. They just open the door to a new legion of fans. This Nebbiolo will do the same given its ready-to-drink now persona - something Nebbiolo of old never dreamt of.

Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard The Revivalist Merlot 2019

Soft and lacy to start and highlighted by dark fruits and plums, but there is some oak here to negotiate.

Pizzini Nonna Gisella Sangiovese 2019

A wonderfully soft wine to throw in a glass and relax. Wines like this elevate a vast array of cuisines.
