Penny's Hill Yeenunga Shiraz 2023

The debut release of Penny's Hill top Shiraz from 50+ year old vines, hold or decant it well before drinking and it will pay you back deluxe.

It sees French oak for 16 months and then another five months in bottle prior to release. Rustic and tense on opening, day two saw a completely different wine emerge.

Dark berry fruit, blackberries, red currants, baked blueberries, dark chocolate and licorice open the account with plenty to entice. Pan juices and cured meat build the courage to make themselves known with sheets of black pepper and baking spices drapped over the palate. There is some tension that coils around the mid-palate ensuring its full personality is not revealed. The Yeenunga Grenache off the site is extremely silky and I hoped this would show some of that, but not so. Still, this is built for the long haul and I'd be interested to see where it's at in a number of years.
