I like this. A lot! The polish and attractive sheen get my attention, not to mention the concentration. This Soumah Hexham Vineyard Chardonnay is a clever piece of work.
Planted in 2006, three clones (95, 76, Mendosa) are grown on the Hexham site that can be found beside the Soumah cellar door. The fruit was wild yeast fermented in French oak (20% new) for eight months.
This won my favour when tasted beside its Upper Ngumby single vineyard sibling. The flow, drive and concentration won out on the day.
Barbecued yellow-fleshed peach, nectarines, figs, creamy oak, vanilla and wafer biscuits. A flinty and struck match character elevates the narrative with a touch of ginger spice on close delivering the perfect send off. Clever stuff.
