Cold night comfort, a ready partner for a steak or slow-cooked beef, House of Clarence is served exclusively at Brisbane's Clarence Restaurant in the uber cool Fish Lane precinct.
A more than pleasant surprise that showcases an impressive aged release, this is already twelve years young. Grown at a Gowrie Mountain vineyard west of Toowoomba, there is much to admire about its presence and shape.
Swirl the glass to reveal smoked meats, charcuterie, smoked paprika and pan juices. Give it some time and coffee grounds plus the faint whisper of caramel raise their hand. Dense and generous, black plums and blackberries won't lie down. It comes in at 15.5% alcohol, but it is clear that time has tamed it, although a touch of warmth creeps in late. Barbecue rub spices have the last word with chewy tannins ready to attack a piece of protein. Quite a surprise packet. Great stuff.
