Peter Sawrey has penned the words for The Signature label over the last 32 years. In a poignant and fitting final chapter, this last tribute he wrote was that of his own. An excellent release once again, this Cabernet Shiraz blend from Yalumba never ceases to impress.
Sourced from three Barossa Cabernet vineyards and three Barossa Shiraz vineyards, this 55/45 blend continues to be a benchmark for the classic Australian claret. The humble pricing of the top-tier Yalumba wines continues to be remarkably restrained, as I have no doubt that the price would be much higher in the hands of other producers. All power to Yalumba for keeping the bar high on quality without losing sight of accessibility for those who appreciate fine wine.
Matured in French and Hungarian oak for 19 months (22% new), this is loaded with an abundance of Cherry Ripe featuring all those beautiful dark chocolate and cherry things, and ably supported by dark plums, blueberries and blackberries. The Barossa earth is not far from sight as it taps away in the background. Intriguingly, an ironstone note emerges with this release, which is unlike those of years gone by. Dried sage and thyme, black olives, a flicker of licorice and coconut husk weave a complex array of detail, building a fabulous structure and shape. A drying finish reaches long with brick dust tannins framing the wine and lending gravitas to a memorable finish. Delightful drinking, and as proven for many years to date, this is another Signature destined for longevity. Bravo!
