Zema Estate Family Selection Shiraz 2019

There’s plenty of life left in this seven-year-old Shiraz, with dark plummy fruit, blackberries and dark cherries still buoyant in the glass, joined by a little red fruit brightness.

Dark chocolate adds richness, while cocoa tannins bring a drying, savoury grip to the finish. The cedary oak is initially pretty dominant and takes a while to loosen its grip, with the wine opening up considerably on day two and three of tasting. Give it air and patience and the fruit starts to push back through, revealing a more generous and enjoyable side. This isn’t a wine I’d rush. Still, seven years old and still kicking for $50 is a win indeed.
