The Granite Belt doesn't have a hero red wine variety, unlike many other regions around Australia. Although many varieties thrive in the cool climate and granite soils, for me, Tempranillo is the best and most consistent performer and has been for many years.
Fire pit appeal by the bucketload, this Tempranillo from Meteora Vineyard is made for cool evening sunsets, meat charred over the coals and everything in between. Red berries and black plums do the heavy lifting, delivering a juicy core before cola, charred meats, charcoal, blistered tomato skin and passata bring the savoury goods. There is plenty happening here, with the fruit and savoury elements working together to create a wine with real personality. It's the structure and shape that give you plenty to snuggle up to, while the tannins leave a firm, chewy imprint. They’re ready to get stuck into a robust piece of protein, slicing through the richness with confidence. A smoky trait might catch your attention at first, but look a little closer and it's the region's distinct granite minerality that is shining through.
Of those tasted in the Meteora Vineyard range, this is the standout for me. Great stuff. Fire up the coals.
