Steels Gate Melba Block Blanc de Blancs 2020

Six years on lees has worked its magic here, delivering complexity without sacrificing charm.

Baked bread, breadsticks, Danish pastry, creme brulee and brioche unfurl from the glass with the confidence of a wine that's had the luxury of time. Beneath the layers of complexity sits a bright core of preserved lemon, lemon juice and crisp green apple. A fine bead and delicate mousse rise up effortlessly from the glass, while a gentle cashew nuttiness adds another layer of interest. What impresses most is the balance. The creamy richness earned from six years on lees never overwhelms, instead it settles comfortably alongside a chalky, mineral line that pulls the wine long through the finish. There's sophistication here but equally a sense of ease. It can comfortably handle a special occasion, yet it remains utterly approachable. An engaging Blanc de Blancs that's a ready-made party starter, well played.
