Tourism has made sure that Wanaka isn't so little any more, that's for sure.
If you drive past Aitken's Folly, don't blink as you could miss it. A small 3 hectare site, only 25% is planted to Chardonnay. From the 548 clone, Aitken's Folly were only the second vineyard in New Zealand to plant it behind the famed Kumeu River.
Made by Dan and Sarah-Kate Dineen at Maude, a stone's throw around the corner, this Chardy sees 12 months in oak.
Some concentrated stone fruit get the juices flowing early. Cashews slide in as do lemons and lemonade. There's a soft vanilla oak influence from the oak with a lick of caramel on close. I could sink a few glasses easy - an perhaps I did. Such a fab drink.
Drink now to three years.
