Gee, I love this variety. I find Saperavi so intriguing and exciting all at the same time. Pioneered in Australia by Hugh Hamilton, they already have some 12 vintages under their belt working with this Georgian originated beauty.
Wonderfully presented in a classy long necked bottle and wax cap, this is mouthfilling and mouth sapping stuff.
A wine that possesses lots of chew, it's big and tannic yet there is a softer, pretty side with glorious scents of blue flowers and pot purri. To taste, it's generous through the mid-palate. Think Ribena, raspberries, red and blue fruit liqueur, some mint and a flash of chocolate. Add a little char, cola rushes late with dried sage as fresh oregano flanks the edges. For all its heft, it glides through the mouth - so soft and so fine. Chewy tannins close things out on a long and delicious finish. Over a few days it blossomed so age will certainly be of benefit. What a beauty and a variety well worth exploring!
