Two varieties I was keen exploring more of on a recent trip to the Barossa (and a quick stop in McLaren Vale) were Grenache and Mataro. I'm pleased I ducked in here to Kay Brothers before heading to the airport - the Basket Pressed Grenache was on song and so too was this Mataro.
Often seen as a variety needing a wingman or two, Mataro (Mourvedre) done well can stand proud on its own two feet. This example certainly does that!
Deliciously medium bodied, charcuterie and meat scream out. I do love a good meat board! Dense and earthy, red fruits are flanked by bitter dark chocolate and dark cherry comes in waves. A suggestion of sarsaparilla sits in the background too. Cocoa tannins seal the deal - a terrific wine at a more than reasonable price.
Drink now to five years.
93/100 - Very good
