Amble Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Chef Matt Stone and partner Jo Barrett have accomplished many things in the food world - cook books and cooking shows but a few. One thing they always wanted to do was make a wine. In collaboration with winemaker Dominic Valentine, that next achievement has been ticked off the list. Brilliant Sauvignon Blanc - words I'd seldom utter.

The brief for Valentine was to make something with skin contact. As Valentine tells me though, this style is only made well with the right treatment, variety and vineyard. As a result, a parcel of Sauvignon Blanc from Willowlake in the Yarra Valley was chosen.

Well presented in a naked bottle with a crown seal - there's nothing left to hide here. Every time I went back to this something new skipped out from the glass. A really impressive drink.

Glace pineapple and pineapple husk, elderflower and vanilla cake mix batter. Another whiff and marigold flower pops up.

Aromatics are intense. The fruit has a delicate drive and the flavours of tropical fruit are mouthfilling. What struck me was that this wine maintains its prettiness from gate to post - classy stuff.

The best Sauvignon Blanc I've ever had perhaps? A winner hands down.

Drink now.
