Bloodwood Riesling 2010

Aged Riesling is a thing of beauty and well worth embracing in two hands. But don't let it slip, like I did...

More to the point, I was sent two samples from Bloodwood. This 2010 museum release (not for sale) was generously sent along with the new 2018 release. Let's just say I never had the chance to review the 2020 after it slipped out of the fridge and went splat on the floor. The first accident of its kind in over ten years of reviewing wines, oh how embarrassed I was.

But let's turn out focus to this absolute beauty. Oh my, what a delight. For an eleven-year-old Riesling, it shines ever so brightly. The back label suggests it will reward medium-term cellaring but this has clearly bucked that idea. I'd suggest it would drink well for up to another decade.

There is a wonderful freshness here. Key lime pie, kaffir lime, honeysuckle, and preserved lemon. Kerosene type notes are synonymous with aged Riesling and these are starting to show, but the citrusy delivery is what impresses most. The acidity still cuts a fine shape and shows some energy as well. Long and drawn out, this is a Riesling raging with refreshment factor. I had this with some plump oysters - how good is living!

If this Riesling is the result of eleven years of patience, I can only imagine how vibrant the new release would have been.

Drink to ten years.
