The best Pet Nat I have tasted. There, I said it! I could actually have a glass of this, and another, and probably another. Refreshing deluxe, this is a great fizz.
Cleverly packaged, this is a Pinot Noir and Riesling blend (66/34) from Black Estate in New Zealand's Waipara region, less than an hour north of Christchurch airport.
The first victory was that it wasn't a gusher. Winning! Too many Pet Nats throw themselves onto the ground - what's good about getting half the wine you paid for? There's a fine bead but it's not busting out of the glass over excitedly - another tick.
Golden cider like in appearance, there is a distinct aroma of cider and apple juice made from concentrate. That apple thing flows to the mouth where it offers a soft caress with a neat foam of delish sitting on top. Apricot kernel, yellow stonefruit, and some brioche add complexity as does a faint nuttiness. This is very clever gear. Leap in if you can find it.
Drink now.
