This is my first look at Gunpowder Wines and I like what I see. Hunter Valley based, winemaker Harrison Medley sourced the fruit from Mudgee. The generosity and structure leave a lasting imprint.
Side projects for young winemakers are golden and allow them to express themselves and play around with a few things they may not ordinarily do for their main employer. Respect to those wineries out there that embrace this exploration.
The fruit was cold soaked on skins for 14 days before seeing two-year-old French and American oak for 12 months before blending.
Presented in a big, heavy bottle with a diam seal, the labelling is detailed and catches the eye.
Fine Dutch chocolate and chocolate bavarian, blackberry paste, satsuma plums and baked blueberries flood the mouth. There is a little fruit sweetness before woodsy spices wrap everything up in a neat parcel. Dusty and silty like tannins are drying and puckering leaving a powdery chew - those robust Mudgee tannins are in full cry.
Find a spot by the fire pit, throw a steak on the coals and I could sip on this all night. It's a great Shiraz.
