This Best's Great Western Bin No.1 Shiraz is all about precision and finesse, and the scary part is that it only gets better the longer you spend with it.
Each revisit revealed a little more, and by the end, I was thoroughly smitten. It oozes cool-climate deliciousness, striking a beautiful balance between fruit, spice and savoury detail.
Berry pie, squishy blueberries and blackberries form a generous fruit core, while smoked meats, clove and cola deliver layers of intrigue. Black pepper, meat-rub spices and fruit bun spices emerge with time, adding further complexity without disturbing the wine's sense of composure. Voluptuous tannins are chewy and provide structure and persistence while contributing to the wine's comforting, moreish nature. Everything feels beautifully aligned, gliding across the palate with confidence and purpose.
There's immense drinking pleasure here now, but equally enough structure and balance to suggest a long future ahead, and I have no doubt it will be humming comfortably beyond a decade.
Superb.
