I had the luxury of tasting this alongside the previous 2022 release and I preferred this Biscay Road 2023 by a fraction. Give it some time to shine and it will reward handsomely.
The second release of this label by vigneron Alan Hickinbotham, the fruit for this wine comes off his Biscay Road vineyard. With 46 hectares of biscay soil that is ten feet deep, this joins his Paringa and 3 Rings labels. As Hickinbotham says, the dry, cracking biscay clay would be something the late great Shane Warne would have enjoyed bowling on. Personally, I have nearly lost a leg not far from this site on Krondorf Road. Those cracks are deep!
Brighter and more vibrant in the glass than the 2022, generous handfuls of dark berry fruit, mulberries, and blackcurrants drive the fruit profile. Dark chocolate is not far away from the action as five spice wraps itself around the mouth with a dash of black pepper. Initially quite muscular with a firm acidity, it softened fabulously over a couple of days of tasting. For 25 bucks, this is a cracking drink.
