Ripe and rich, I'm curious as to why this Curtis Small Batch Grenache Shiraz is the current release from the 2021 vintage. Big, voluptuous and robust in its presence, it's a wine that poses more questions than answers.
As I swirl the glass and take a whiff, things just don't mesh. Church pew, camphor, damp earth and rum 'n' raisin notes make the first impression. Said to be 14.5% alcohol, it's muscular and dense. Dark berry fruit, Christmas cake nuances, some dark chocolate, brown spices and baking spices with a cherry liqueur swooping late. The palate is broad and the tannins are chewy. This blend has the ability to show vibrance and energy but instead, we have a wine of bulk and spice. It's a wine I'd find hard to recommend but those who enjoy such bigger styles may be appeased.
Drink to five years.
