The lighter of the three Mencia samples recently tasted, this release from Hidden Creek leans more towards the savoury spectrum and sits just under medium-bodied. This is a wine sure to win a new legion of fans.
Red currants and sour cherries early, touches of rhubarb and earthy feels too, it is certainly a wine that jumps out of the blocks. Scents of sarsparilla and French polish also get my attention.
Sourced from the Riverland, some tension is evident early but that eases off, dusty tannins cool their heels with more time in the glass and show a softer side. The fruit slides through a little quicker than expected with a bright red apple acidity clinging to a long and persistent finish surrounded by a smattering of spices. Pizza, pasta, burgers, paella - this has all those bases covered.
