Marzemino hails from northern Italy and is new to this tasting bench. The thrill of checking out new varieties is exciting and never ceases to amaze me. A smooth red wine that is not overly layered, it is a stand and deliver type with crowd pleasing appeal given its easy going nature.
Planted in 2018 at Soumah's Hexham site, this 2022 is the first release. It saw French oak for 12 months (10% new).
Dark plums and plum compote are joined by blackberry pie and blackberry jam. A hint of pastry and chocolate slide in along with a very fine dusting of dried herbs. It glides about with ease. With a buxom and fruity finish, there is little spice to speak of and it is a wine you could make easy work of.
Drink to three years.
