One from left field, and bang, we have a home run! What a pretty and delicious Grenache from the Barossa's Vinya Vella!
This is a wine I've never seen before nor heard of until Dr Dylan Grigg got in touch recently. With a PhD on old vines under his belt, this viticulturalist has a cherished Vine Vale block that has become a little winemaking side project (with some help from Spinifex's Peter Schell) in between his busy schedule keeping local and international vineyards up to scratch.
With the roots of these early 1900s plantings getting deep in this Barossa subregion's famous sands, the terroir's prettiness shines through. Dried rose petals, purple flowers and raspberries bring attractive scents and have me scrambling for more. What a start!
Juicy raspberries and blueberries fill the mouth with delight along with dried herbs, dried currants and dashes of meatiness. And then the spice sneaks up and ripples through. Yes! Strap yourself in for a luscious ride. A dusty texture pushes long with those red fruits building momentum. The drinkability factor is immense and nourishes your curiosity. This was one of those tastings that turned into a drinking, so if that's not a sign of what's good, well...
