Quite the showstopper, this Huntington Estate Grenache stole the Grenache gong from the usual McLaren Vale and Barossa suspects at the Royal Sydney Wine Show - well played!
It's a different shape and feel to those Huntington Grenache releases of years gone by. I caught up with winemaker Tim Stevens in September 2023 at the winery and Grenache was a big talking point. He loves the stuff (and my readers know I do too) and the change in approach to the winemaking is evident with this release.
Lusciously medium-bodied, red and blue fruits reign supreme as you'd expect but there is a little more palate weight than some of its interstate counterparts - I see some of those robust Mudgee tannins peering through. That touch more weight shoulders some earthiness, twigs and pencil shaving like characters.
Scents of dried petals continue to diffuse with ease to be joined by raspberry rope, stewed rhubarb and some ripe red currants. The aroma profile lifted wonderfully on days two and three of tasting. Give this some air and you'll be the winner. Blueberries reign supreme with some mulberries for good measure and a fine sheet of spice reaching long. The extra time was a factor I found as it really bounds along after a couple of days tasting. Give this a decant and it will be bristling.
Drink to five years.
