I always look forward to the comparison between the two single vineyard Chardonnays that Soumah produce. The Upper Ngumby site is located in Yarra Glen, a short drive from the cellar door. Of the previous 2023 releases, this was the wine I leaned towards, but the concentration of the Hexham won my favour between these 2024 releases.
Wild yeast fermented in French oak (20% new) for eight months, the finish of this wine pulls up a little short, and I only wish it would reach out further into its arc.
White fleshed nectarines, barbecued peach, figs, praline, cashews and vanilla cream with well-handled oak. There is enough presence and interest through the front and mid-palate, but it's the flow through to the back which I'm looking for. For what is here, there is good weight and aromatic interest.
