Sheer bliss. This Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet is like a magic carpet ride through the clouds. It's poise, presence and sophistication deliver an outstanding release.
First produced in 1982, the John Riddoch is Wynn's flagship wine and it sees 17 months in French oak (43% new, 42% one year old with the remainder in seasoned oak).
A delightful introduction sees Bay leaf, licorice, dark chocolate, leather and puffs of earth slowly diffuse from the glass. Sage and mint hitch a ride and then the fruit starts to talk. Sheets of blackberries and black currants add some elegant density with red berries raising their hand. The oak is expertly handled and plays a superb supporting role. A flicker of meatiness steps forward on the third day of tasting as the delicate density keeps humming along. Dried mint attaches itself to a persistent finish that further highlights the soft touch and presence of the wine and fine pillows of tannin have the last word. Elegance and class in equal doses, this is sublime.
