A wonderfully complex Pinot Noir from New Zealand's Black Estate. From Waipara which can be found less than an hour north of Christchurch, the brand was established in 1994.
Certified organic, the vines were planted on sedimentary clay and the wine was fermented with wild yeast, saw 28 days on skins and was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Some pretty scents of purple flowers hook you in. Dark cherries, red plums, some meatiness and char run deep and coat the mouth generously. A little tense with red apple acidity, it softened over a couple of days tasting. This is a great Pinot that will age gracefully.
