A lot has been going on at Oliver's Taranga of late. A new snazzy cellar door, new plantings in the vineyard, a sweet new ride for vineyard tours and a facelift for the premium wines. This Grenache is a newby too, named after third-generation Robert William Oliver (born 1882).
Family businesses offer an extra level of appeal when you learn their story. I've had the privilege of tasting Oliver's Taranga wines for a number of years now and I'm still fascinated by what I find out about this family's history.
Robert William Oliver took over the family's business in the 1920s developing a dried fruit business as well as a cattle and Clydesdale stud. A keen cricketer and AFL player, he helped establish local clubs with a 'best on ground' medal named after him that is still awarded to this day. How good is that?
This Grenache is a beauty. It slips down with ease. Some fruit sweetness skirts the juicy raspberry and baked raspberry fruits. Some choc brownie and an array of fine and exotic spices tack on the back of some savoury and earthy characters through the mid-palate. Long and moreish, it does nothing but urge another sip. Juicy, fine spiced, glorious - gimme more.
