I haven't seen a Cumulus wine for yonks. Here's a new range of wines in their armoury coming under the Alte label - high altitude wines from Orange, NSW.
Coming off vines which are 25 years old and 600 metres above, Debbie Lauritz is the winemaker.
A whiff and it reminded me of those sugar coated almonds you only see at weddings. There's a fair hand of oak in there too which takes over. Grilled figs and barbecued peach are also prominent but its a wine that seems almost two paced. The fruit comes before a pause button is hit, we re-calibrate, and then oak and texture slide through. The acid is tense and doesn't compliment the fruit as well as I would have hoped. I like the packaging, I wanted to like the wine, but it just seems a bit all over the place and doesn't mesh as I would have liked. Perhaps time will help?
Drink to five years.
