Tim Smith has access to some spectacular parcels of fruit. On a recent trip to the Barossa, we jumped in the car and he drove me around a couple of them. Stunning vineyards on incredible soil profiles. The Mataro blended into this wine comes off 145 year old vines.
The Grenache vines are 80 years old. Some pretty heady numbers already for a wine that costs 30 bucks. A 60/30/10 blend all up.
Scrumptious comes to mind while I taste this in Smith's lab. A wonderful drive of red fruit pushes through with ease. Blue fruits swing into action as do come black berries as handfuls of five spice and baking type spices are scattered through the mouth. As you continue to peruse, charcuterie like meatiness comes calling. A touch of creamy chocolate appears, seizes up then soars once more on top of the crest upon exit. Such a delicious blend and then some. Vegetarian and vegan friendly too I'm told. Charge at this with a glass in each hand.
Drink to five years.
