From 2010-2015 The Curly was produced - an experimentation in the winery. Winemaker Matt Harrop has now shifted the focus from the winery to the vineyard with the release of the Central and Western which together make the Curly Flat Pinot we all know.
With only 130 dozen produced, what struck me with this Western compared to the 'normal' Curly Flat blend is that this seemed a bit brighter and prettier. Planted in 1997 and 1998, there's a bit of tension in the mouth but the fruit swims effortlessly. Eleven separate fermentations took place with range of 0-35% whole bunches used. Almonds and vanilla, plums and blueberries, there is a concentration of fruit on the mid palate but, like a stone thrown into a pond, the ripples of pleasure gently reach out. Made with 100% old French oak, fine spices and delicate satiny tannins cap off a most impressive wine. Oh what a peach.
