This is the first time I've seen Curly Flat's Central Vineyard in a separate bottling (bottle pic not current - apologies). From the oldest vines on the property planted in 1992, winemaker Matt Harrop says these vines have been the backbone of the Curly Pinot Noir many adore.
To taste the Central and the Western side by side, you can see where the Curly Flat Pinot gets its roots. With only 130 dozen produced, this Central fruit is deep rooted with broad shoulders. It's much weightier and muscular than the pretty Western. Six ferments made up this wine with a range of 0-35% whole bunches used. Quite dense in the mouth, there's some warmth with protrudes. Made with 25% new oak, I feel the oak overplays its hand just a touch too. Rich, firm tannins with brown spices to close, it reminds me of some of the hefty Central Otago Pinots I've had of late.
