An excellent expression of cool climate Syrah, the Montalto Single Vineyard Tuerong Syrah 2024 is the best release of this wine that I have seen to date. It's worth noting I made a similar comment about the 2023 being the "best release I have seen to date", but the 2024 has finally cracked the code to score 95 points.
Planted in 1995 and 30 metres above sea level, the fruit from this Tuerong site was handpicked, fermented in two tonne open fermenters and then it sat on skins for 21 days. It was then pressed to French oak (22% new) for 11 months before bottling.
Svelte is the word. Lifted dried purple flower aromas set the scene. Red currants, baked raspberries and blueberries shine with a blackberry undertow. Pan juices, cured meats, char and dried herbs add a neat detail of savoury delight with fine, dusty and sandy tannins whispering you back for more. If peppery Syrah is your go-to, this is in the slot. That pepper is scattered about with a seemingly deliberate precision. Importantly, this hit its straps on day two and three of tasting, demonstrating its capability to age. A good decant before enjoying now is the way to go. All up, it's an excellent wine, hands down.
