Matthew Atallah - what a guy! I really enjoyed his company when we met in Orange recently. So passionate and with a horde of hilarious stories to share, he has a clever bunch of wines under his arm since branching out on his own in 2016. This 2017 Chardonnay goes right back to the beginning. Big love for this wine.
Sourced from the famed Balmoral vineyard planted circa 1988, Atallah has an eye for detail and he is very specific about which rows he takes. He was kind enough to crack open this museum release for a looksy.
Rich, this goes through full MLF with lots of lees stirring. A generous wine made oxidatively, think caramel, popcorn and yellow stonefruit with a fine texture feathered throughout. Still showing some tension despite its age, there is a fine-boned elegance about its presence. Gee, I enjoyed it, and based on where it's at, it will continue to deliver for over another decade. Winning!
