Only produced in the best years, the Castello di Neive Santa Stefano Riserva Barbaresco DOCG 2018 is a compelling expression of site and variety. The finesse and elegance are clear from the outset, I could bathe in this.
Swirl the glass and the aromas peel off with ease. Think dark cherry compote, red flowers, nutmeg, licorice and shimmers of red currants. Tucked underneath the silky fruit is a melange of dried herbs, herbal tea, brown spices and some bitterness that echoes all the beautiful Negroni things.
The precision and detail are captivating with balsamic, almond, earthy and mushroom notes adding to the savoury presence. Superfine tannins give the impression that they have been carefully placed and build tension that elevates the moreish factor, not to mention the class on offer.
A Barbaresco of depth, intellect and supreme splendour, it's drinking beautifully now, but there is no need to rush. Time will continue to be its friend - it's a brilliant wine.
