It is aged for five years prior to release including two years in seasoned Slovakian oak barrels.
The wine opens with aromatic intensity but in the mouth the fine, chalky tannins explode like a powder bomb coating a core of concentrated, brooding fruit. Ripe cherries and plums are layered with touches of dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, and subtle balsamic notes. While 2017 was a hot vintage, this wine avoids the over-ripeness I saw in a few Barolo examples during my travels. Instead, it channels that heat into powerful structure and depth, not excess. It's worth noting that the fruit feels compact and resilient rather than lush or opulent.
Compared to the 2019 Riserva, this does show more extraction and density. It's bold but not cooked, yet expressive and grounded. It’s a commanding wine, there is no doubting that. Of the two Riservas tasted, I would prefer the 2019.
