Tasted at the cellar door on my recent Italian sojourn, the step up in quality with this Rocche Costamagna Barbera d'Alba DOC Superiore Rocche Delle Rocche 2021 is clear when sitting beside the more playful Barbera d'Alba.
From soils composed of sand, silt, clay and limestone, the fruit was handpicked and saw seasoned French oak for 10 months.
Delightful is the word that immediately leaps to mind. A cascade of black cherries, morello cherries and plums flow with ease. A wine of poise and composure, vanilla, almonds and fine spices fold through with ease. Chocolate nibs raise their hand late but it's the silky delicacy that steals the limelight not to mention that forever length. Yes!
