Only the fourth release of this sublime wine, the Vietti Barolo Monvigliero DOCG 2021 is an extraordinary expression of Barolo. Just wow!
Tasted at the cellar door with winemaker Eugenio Palumbo, my time at Vietti was nothing short of a privilege. Exploring his range of wines was truly a treat and I'm grateful for the opportunity.
This particular wine hails from a lower vineyard nestled along the riverbanks, a cherished 44-year-old site sitting at approximately 240 meters above sea level. The combination of limestone and clay soils imparts a distinct character that Palumbo clearly reveres.
In contrast to the other expressions, this wine undergoes fermentation with 60% whole bunches in stainless steel, followed by 30 months in large format Slovakian oak.
It’s a wine that unfolds gradually, drawing you in with a refined, steady grip. The elegance and precision are striking. Aromas and flavours of dried purple flowers, strawberries, red and dark cherries, blueberries, orange peel, cola and shards of dark chocolate create a layered, captivating profile. Each note is clear and expressive. The late emergence of fine pepper, licorice, and mint adds another level of allure.
The tannins are a true highlight. Silky yet commanding, they demonstrate both finesse and restraint. Exceptionally long and persistent on the finish, this is a wine of quiet power and immense esteem. A brilliant package hands down.
Built for the long haul, this is one to cellar with patience.
