Ridgemill Estate The Czar Saperavi 2015

Recently awarded a Gold medal at the World Saperavi Competition on the variety's home soil in Georgia. Layered with interest, it is easy to see what the fuss is about.

Planted in 2006, Saperavi is known for its ability to withstand the cold and it has certainly found a happy home on the Granite Belt.

Aromas of aniseed, juicy red plums and peppermint chocolate, this throws out a more than respectable welcome mat.

A big and brawny wine, peel back layers of tomato bush, twigs and granite minerality all surrounding dense and generous fruit. Peppermint choc rears its head again on the death with fine spices on a long and rustic finish. Classy red wine this and it certainly caught me by surprise.
