"I just wanted to make a wine you could sit down and smash the shit out of," are the words of winemaker Stuart Dudine. And isn't that just what you want to drink? Something tasty and easy drinking to share with friends around a table. He's hit the mark here too mind you. All the cool kids are making their own side labels so it was time he jumped in too he tells me. This Syrah is his first release.
Dudine came across a great parcel of fruit from Warramunda Estate at in the Yarra Valley and the rest speaks for itself.
And the result? Some funky town action here. It was quite stinky initially but nothing a double decant can't fix.
Two thirds of the fruit was destemmed and wild yeast fermented. The remainder was 100% whole bunch and fermented in a tank for five weeks.
Medium bodied, the berry fruits are sexy and move with grace. Aromas of raspberries, cherry liqueur, blueberries, roasted capsicum and some forest floor bring the wild fermentation characters to the fore. Soft, succulent and moreish, those berry fruits and some earthy characters are persistent and generous with a long finish. I just wanted more; another example of cool climate deliciousness.
