Golden Grove Estate Chardonnay 2016

Winemaker Ray Costanzo says Chardonnay is his play thing. He continues to tinker with it and is happy with the progression it is making each year.

Varietal traits are all present but it's the mouth feel where things get interesting. A squeeze of lemon juice, nougat, white stone fruit, match stick, licks of caramel and a creamy delivery are all there, but for me, the acid seems a little offset from the fruit. Whilst still tight and sitting just on the lean side of the spectrum, in the mouth it's clingy.

Textural feels mid palate tick the box and are a result from time 24 hours on skins. But there's a finish which leaves a greenish phenolic grip. A day on and that smoothed over. The oak (50% new French and 50% tank) and cream caress the sides and back of the palate.

Chill it down and enjoy with creamy pasta dishes as recommended.

This will improve with bottle age. Give it another year before best drinking.
